WWE "New Year's Revolution"

Location: Albany, New York

by 'Rockin' Robin Drodge

Event Date:  January 8, 2006

Match number one - Intercontinental Championship

Intercontinental Champion, Ric Flair, Vs. Edge, (with Lita in his corner).  This was the opening match for New Year’s Revolution.  This match was all right.  The ending saw Ric Flair bring Lita into the ring and apply the figure-four leg lock.  This led to Edge hitting Flair in the head with his Money In The Bank Briefcase; resulting in Edge getting disqualified, which resulted in Ric Flair retaining the Intercontinental Championship.

Match number two - WWE Women's Championship.

WWE Women's Champion, Trish Stratus Vs. Mickie James.  This match was very good.  The ending saw Mickie hit the stratusfaction on Trish that only resulted in a two-count.  Then Trish tried to hit the stratusfaction on Mickie, however Mickie tried to counter it.  Then Mickie tried to hit the mick-kick, however Mickie missed.  Trish then hit the chick kick on Mickie to pick up the pin-fall victory to retain her Championship.

Match number three - Jerry "The King” Lawler Vs. Gregory Helms.

This match was all right.  The ending saw Jerry "The King” Lawler hit a fist drop from off the top rope to pick up the pin-fall victory.

Match number four - The Big Show Vs. Triple H.

This match was all right.  The ending saw the referee get knocked down, in which Triple H used a steel chair to hit on The Big Show's injured hand.  When The Big Show tried to attempt the choke slam, Triple H used a piece of a sledgehammer to hit him in the head, then this was followed up with the pedigree, in which the referee who was knocked down counted the three-count.

Match number five - Shelton Benjamin (with his mother in his corner) Vs. Viscera.

This match was all right.  The ending saw Shelton’s mother hit Viscera in the head with her purse; which led to Shelton hitting a spin kick to pick up the pin-fall victory.

Match number six - Bra and Panties Divas Gauntlet Match.  Maria Vs. Candice Michelle.

These were the first two Divas to compete in this match.  The only way you were eliminated from the match was when you were stripped down to your bra and panties.  Candice was the first Diva to be eliminated.  The next Diva to enter this match was Torrie Wilson.  Torrie was stripped down to her bra and panties, so she was eliminated.  The next Diva to enter was Victoria.  Maria was stripped down to her bra and panties, so she was the next Diva to be eliminated from this match.  Then Mae Young and the Fabulous Moolah made their way to the ring.  Mae stripped down to her bra and panties.  Then Victoria attacked Mae from behind, which led to Victoria being stripped down to her bra. The last Diva to enter this match was Ashley.  Victoria tried to hit the Widows Peak, however it was reversed, which led to Victoria being completely stripped down to her bra and panties.  This meant Ashley was the winner of the Bra and Panties Divas Gauntlet match.  Afterwards, Ashley decided to strip down to her bra and panties.

Match number seven - The main event, WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match.  WWE Champion, John Cena Vs. Kurt Angle Vs. Carlito Vs. The “Masterpiece” Chris Masters Vs. Shawn Michaels and Kane.

On the December 26, 2005 episode of RAW, all six participants in the elimination chamber match competed in a series of matches to see who could beat the clock the quickest, which would then result in them entering the elimination chamber match last.

Shawn Michaels was the first superstar to enter the chamber.  The second superstar was John Cena.  These two superstars wrestled for four minutes in which at that time another superstar from a mini chamber would be unlocked and they would enter the chamber match.  After the four minutes were up, Carlito was the next superstar to enter the chamber.  Then Kurt Angle was the next superstar to enter after the four minutes were up.  Kurt Angle was on a role delivering german suplex after suplex.  Angle then applied the ankle lock on Carlito, however thanks to Chris masters entering the chamber, Carlito did not tap out because Masters broke up the ankle lock as soon as he entered the chamber.  Angle then applied the ankle lock on John Cena and then Shawn Michaels hit the sweet chin music on Angle to pick up the pin-fall victory to eliminate Angle.  Eliminations could only occur either by pin-fall or submission.  Once the final four minutes were up, Kane, the final superstar in the elimination chamber match, entered the chamber.  Kane was the next superstar eliminated when both Carlito and Chris Masters pinned Kane at the same time.  Then Shawn Michaels was the next superstar to be eliminated when Carlito hit a neck breaker on Michaels to pick up the pin-fall victory.  So the final three superstars were Carlito, Chris Masters and John Cena.  It appeared that Carlito and Masters would work together, however this all changed when Masters applied the masterlock on Cena.  Before Masters could try to get Cena to submit, Carlito turned on Masters, and Masters was then eliminated by Cena.  The final two superstars were Cena and Carlito.  Cena pinned Carlito to pick up the pin-fall victory to retain his Championship.

Afterwards the match ended, Vince McMahon made his way down to the ring and announced that the Pay-Per-View was not over.  He ordered that the elimination chamber be raised up from the ring because there was one more match to take place.  He then announced that John Cena would be defending the WWE Championship against Edge.  Edge, who had won The Money In The Bank ladder match at Wrestlemania 21, was entitled to a title shot that was in effect for a year.   So he decided to cash it in.  The match got underway when Edge delivered the spear on Cena and got a two-count. Edge decided to hit a second spear, in which he picked up the pin-fall victory to become the new WWE Champion.

Some additional comments regarding New Year’s Revolution.

I don’t know what to say about this Pay-Per-View because for the most part it was not the best.

There was no announcement of how many fans were in attendance, so I can only assume that this Pay-Per-View was not a sell-out.

I really enjoyed the Women's Championship match between Trish Stratus and Mickie James.  I was not sure if Trish would retain the Championship or if she would lose it to Mickie.  I think very shortly, Mickie will be upset at her Idol and will take it out on her and turn heel, which will continue this feud and I would expect that she would win the Women's Championship at Wrestlemania this upcoming April in Chicago.

I was not that impressed with the Triple H vs. The Big Show, and the Shelton Benjamin vs. Viscera matches.  They weren’t that interesting or very good.  I am very happy that John Cena is no longer the WWE Champion.  Monday on RAW from Eastrutherford, New Jersey, the fans sent a loud message to the WWE when they booed Cena out of the building, and during tonight’s Main Event he was booed every time he did any offense.  I don’t know that Edge is the right choice to be the WWE Champion right now, but I am very happy that at least someone else is the Champion.  I think Edge is all right in the ring, but in my opinion he is an ok wrestler, but not the best.  I am not sure how long of a title reign he will have, but for right now at least Cena is no longer the Champion.  I am wondering if Edge will have the belt for sometime or if this is just a short-term title reign.
