WWE "Royal Rumble"
A RAW & SmackDown! Co-Production

Location:  American Airlines Arena, Miami, Florida

by 'Rockin' Robin Drodge

Event Date:  January 29, 2006

Match Number One - SmackDown!.  WWE Cruiserweight Championship: Open Invitational match with Texas Tornado Rules.  The first Cruiserweight to pick up a pin-fall or a submission would win the match and the Cruiserweight Championship.  WWE Cruiserweight Champion Kid Kash, vs. Funaki, vs. Nunzio, vs. Paul London vs. Jamie Noble and Gregory Helms.  This was the opening match for the Royal Rumble.  This match was all right.  The ending saw Gregory Helms hit the Shining Wizard on Funaki to pick up the pin-fall victory to become the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion.

Match Number Two - RAW.   Mickie James vs. Ashley with the WWE Women’s Champion, Trish Stratus, as the special guest referee for this match.  Before the match, as Trish was attempting to make her way to the ring to referee, Mickie tried to talk to Trish. However, Trish did not have time for her.  Mickie told Trish that she loved her.  This contest was all right.  Mickie hit a power bomb from off the second rope to pick up the pin-fall in which Trish counted two, but she was reluctant to count the three, but as a referee she had to count the three, giving Mickie the victory.

Match Number Three - SmackDown! The Boogeyman vs. John “Bradshaw” Layfield (JBL).  This was an all right match.  The ending saw JBL try to hit the “clothesline from hell”, however he missed and hit the ring post on the outside of the ring, which led to a pump-handle slam from the Boogeyman to pick up the pin-fall victory.

Match Number Four - The Royal Rumble™ Match. The rules for this match are the following:  Two Superstars will start the match that have drawn numbers one and two, then every 90 seconds after, another Superstar will enter the ring until all 30 Superstars have entered the ring. Once all 30 Superstars have entered the ring, the last remaining Superstar, after all 29 other Superstars have been eliminated, will win the match and go on to wrestle the WWE Champion or the World Heavyweight Champion in the main event of Wrestlemania.  Eliminations can only occur when a Superstar is thrown over the top rope and both feet hit the floor.

In total, there were 15 Superstars represented from RAW and 15 Superstars represented from SmackDown.  During the night, various WWE Superstars drew their number to determine which order they would enter the Royal Rumble.  Triple H drew number one and Rey Mysterio drew number two, these two Superstars started the match.  The other 28 Superstars made their entrance into the ring as the 90 seconds expired.  Order of entry starting with number three:  Simon Dean, Psicosis, Ric Flair, Big Show, Jonathan Coachman, Bobby Lashley, Kane, Sylvan, Carlito, Chris Benoit, Booker T, Joey Mercury, Tatanka, Johnny Nitro, Trevor Murdoch, Eugene, Road Warrior Animal, Rob Van Dam, Orlando Jordan, Chavo Guerrero, Matt Hardy, Super Crazy, Shawn Michaels, Chris Masters, Viscera, Shelton Benjamin, Goldust, Randy Orton.

The final four Superstars were: Rob Van Dam, Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton and Triple H.  Rey Mysterio eliminated Rob Van Dam when RVD tried to climb the top rope but was knocked off. Now there were only three Superstars left in the Royal Rumble, Mysterio, Randy Orton and Triple H.  Triple H was the next Superstar to be eliminated when Rey Mysterio hit the 619, which led to his elimination.  The two final Superstars in the ring were Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton.  Orton attempted to eliminate Rey Mysterio when he picked him up on his shoulders.  As he tried to eliminate him, Mysterio reversed the move and hit a huricanrana, which resulted in Rey Mysterio winning the Royal Rumble match.

Match Number FiveRAW.  WWE Championship:  WWE Champion, Edge (with Lita in his corner), vs. John Cena.  This match was all right.  The ending saw Cena hit the FU on Edge, which was then followed up with the STF, that resulted in Edge tapping out to the move, resulting in John Cena becoming the new WWE Champion.

Match Number Six - SmackDown! The Main Event - World Heavyweight Championship:  World Heavyweight Champion, Kurt Angle, vs. Mark Henry (with Daivari in his corner).  This match was all right.  The ending saw Kurt Angle expose the turnbuckle pad, in which Mark Henry hit his head on it.  This resulted in a roll-up with Angle’s feet on the ropes to help him pick up the pin-fall victory to retain his Championship.  After the match ended, the Undertaker’s music started to play and he made his way to the ring.  This ended the Royal Rumble.

Some additional comments regarding the Royal Rumble™.

I am not sure how many fans were in attendance because according to the WWE the Royal Rumble was sold out.  There were references during the night that there was approximately 16,000 fans in attendance, but there was no official number announced.

I am happy the WWE decided to put Gregory Helms in the Cruiserweight Championship Open Invitational match, because he should have been on SmackDown in the first place, not on RAW.  So having him a part of the match was very good.  I think he is going to get a push now that he won the Cruiserweight Championship, plus the fact now he is a heel.  So as the Champion, I would think that he would have to go to Smackdown.

But then again, I would not be surprised if he does not appear on SmackDown, because for some reason all of the Cruiserweights end up on Velocity, that can only be viewed on WWE.com, so up until this time the Cruiserweight Title really has not meant anything so I would not be surprised if this still remains the same.  Hopefully, Gregory Helms will get an opportunity to shine on SmackDown compared to RAW.

I thought the Women’s match was all right.  However, the only thing that this really accomplished is the continuation of the feud between Mickie James and Trish Stratus.  I am really enjoying this feud. I think that sooner than later, Mickie is going to snap because Trish is not to thrilled at everything Mickie has done so far, especially when it comes to her supposedly Idol.  I expect Mickie to turn heel and for the two Divas to wrestle at Wrestlemania in Chicago, whereby Mickie would end Trish’s long reign as Women’s Champion.  I don’t know if Mickie is obsessed or if she is trying to play mind games with Trish’s head to get what she wants, which is the Women’s Championship.  I really don’t know, but hopefully it will be one of the very good matches at Wrestlemania coming up in April.

I was a little surprised the Royal Rumble match took place very early in the Pay-Per-View.  Normally, this would be the Main Event and would end the Pay-Per-View.  I don’t know why the WWE decided to have the Royal Rumble match earlier than the two remaining Title matches.

I am not happy that John Cena won back the WWE Championship Belt.  I really don’t understand this move at all.  I don’t know if it has to do with the WWE wanting Cena to wrestle Triple H at Wrestlemania, but in my opinion, it was not a good decision.

Edge, even though I don’t think he is the best wrestler, at the time I think it was a good decision to take the title off Cena and put it on Edge at New Year's Revolution.  Edge got the opportunity to be Champion to see if he could prove whether or not he could be a good Champion.

I believe he was proving he could be a good Champion due to the fact for three weeks straight, ever since he won the Championship, the ratings for RAW have been really strong.  This is one of the things that let the Superstar and the Company determine whether this person could be a good choice to be Champion and represent the Company, which I think he was doing this.

However, with Edge as Champion for 21 days, the ratings have been phenomenal for the WWE.  Due to this, I think he should have had a longer title reign.

The Kurt Angle/ Mark Henry match was all right.  I was not surprised with Angle retaining his title due to the fact that it was reported on the Internet the main event for No Way Out would be Kurt Angle against The Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship.

I am very happy for Rey Mysterio that he won the Royal Rumble match.  Rey dedicated the match to the late Eddie Guerrero.  Even though he won the match and is supposed to go to Wrestlemania to wrestle for the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship, I really don’t know if this will happen or not.  He certainly deserves the opportunity to find out if he can be a World Champion.   I am not sure at this time, as far as Wrestlemania is concerned, if he will get the opportunity to wrestle for the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship.  I would not rule out in the near future that Rey gets a title shot and he wins the title at some point in his WWE career.
